Fuzzy green substance found
growing at Loudon restaurant
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A grill with a low health inspection grade serves not only pizzas, but burgers, hot dogs, and hoagies as well. The inspector checked half a dozen violations that could potentially cause foodborne illness.
The grade was 73 at Jay’s
New York Pizza and Grill on Mulberry Street in Loudon. That 73
is a passing score, as any grade of 69 and below is considered a
failing grade.
A lot of spoiled food was found by the inspector. He wrote that cod loins in the cooler were rotten, and a bad smell was emanating from the bag they were wrapped in. He found a green “fuzzy” substance growing on the surface of several pans of smoked meat. The inspector also wrote that he found a fuzzy green substance growing on pans of cooked potatoes. The potatoes, smoked meat, and cod loins were thrown away. The temperature chart at the walk-in cooler showed temperatures were way too warm. They fluctuated between 47 and 55 degrees. But 41 and below is the correct cool temperature to slow bacteria growth. As a result, 400 pounds of food were thrown away. From meats and vegetables, to cheese and dressing, about all the food that had been in the refrigerator.
Also, parts of roast
beef and smoked meat had exceeded their date limit by three
days. When the date of first use is marked on ready-to-eat
food, it must be used within seven days to maintain
wholesomeness.
The inspector returned to Jay’s New York Pizza and Grill. He checked to see if the critical violations were corrected; they were. The new re-inspected score is a 92. Restaurants are inspected every six months, and the reports are supposed to be posted inside where you can find them. |
